Hedges and bocage
Hedges are the cheapest way to add lots of cover to a table, and Normandy bocage is what makes a 1944 game feel like 1944.
Simple hedges
Bases
Cut strips of thick card or thin MDF about 15cm long. Bevel the edges if you can.
Hedge
Cut green or black scouring pads into strips and glue them on edge along the base. Tear the top edge so it isn't perfectly straight.
Colour
Brush watered-down PVA over the pad and sprinkle green flock or ground foam. Use two greens for variety.
Finish the base
Sand, paint and add a few tufts to match your other terrain.
Bocage
Bocage is a raised earth bank with thick hedge and trees on top. Build a long, low wedge of foam or a stack of card, coat it in grout and sand, then add the scouring-pad hedge on top and a few small trees. Make sections tall enough to block line of sight for infantry, and leave one or two gaps or gates.
Make them last
- Seal flock with a coat of watered-down PVA, then matt varnish.
- Store hedges flat in a shallow box so they don't get crushed.
