Budget Battlefields

Build

Ruined buildings

Ruins block line of sight, give hard cover and look great. They're also easier to build than intact houses, because damage hides mistakes.

Materials

Foam board or XPS foam for walls, corrugated card or coffee stirrers for floors and beams, PVA glue, sand, gravel, and grey and brown paint.

Steps

  1. Base

Cut a base a bit bigger than the building's footprint, leaving room for rubble.

  2. Walls

Cut two or three walls with doors and windows. Size them so a 28mm figure fits through the door. Cut jagged broken tops, keeping one corner tall.

  3. Texture

Score brick or stone lines into foam with a blunt pencil. For card, glue on small strips for exposed beams.

  4. Floors

A broken upper floor of coffee stirrers on one corner gives height without blocking access.

  5. Rubble

Pile sand, gravel and broken foam bits against the walls and glue them down with plenty of PVA.

  6. Paint

Base everything dark grey or brown, dry-brush lighter grey or brick colour, and add a dusty pale dry-brush over the rubble.

Ready-made option

We don't sell terrain. If you'd rather not build everything, some game boxes include it: the Pike & Shotte Epic Battles Push of Pike starter set includes an MDF fortified manor house, according to Warlord Games. Price at the Warlord Minis store (which runs this site) as of October 25, 2026:
