Build
Roads, craters and winter
Quick pieces that finish a table: roads to tie it together, craters for cover, and a way to play winter games without building everything twice.
Roads
Material
Use flexible material like craft foam, or a strip of acrylic caulk spread on baking paper and left to cure. Flexible roads lie flat over hills and table bumps.
Texture
Press an old toothbrush or crumpled foil into the surface for ruts and gravel.
Paint
Earth brown for dirt roads, dry-brushed with a pale sand colour. Darker in the ruts.
Craters
Glue a ring of foam, putty or papier-mâché onto a thin round base. Fill the rim and slopes with sand and grit, paint dark brown in the centre and lighter on the rim, and add a little rubble or a broken branch.
Winter
- Snow cloth: a white felt or fleece sheet over the table covers everything. Put hills under it.
- Removable snow: sprinkle a little baking soda or a commercial snow flock on top of terrain for the game, then tip it off. Test on a scrap first.
- Dedicated pieces: if you play winter a lot, build a few hedges, ruins and craters with snow texture paste, and leave brown slush where feet and tracks would churn it.
